1 Yoga Hike, 5 Parks! – Yoga Hikes DC Starts Saturday in Rosslyn!

Yoga Hikes is in Rosslyn, Virgina – May & July

Yoga Hikes DC is very excited to be invited by the Rosslyn Business Improvement District to come back to Rosslyn, VA, this time for two months – May and July!    Our urban Yoga Hike is unlike any other outdoor workout in Rosslyn.  You will go hiking through 5 different parks (Gateway, Highlands, Hillside, Dark Star, and Freedom Park) and stop in 3 of them for roughly 15 minutes of yoga (total of 45 minutes).  These urban hikes follow our signature Yoga Hikes format of 15 min. yoga/15 min. hiking intervals for 90 minutes through the parks and up the hills of Rosslyn, VA. MEETS AT: the street level offices of the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) located at: 1911 North Fort Myer Drive, LL-10, Arlington, VA 22209 (next door to the side of Continental Pool Lounge facing Gateway Park).  Space is limited, please sign up early!

You can find these classes on our MindBodyOnline registration site. These classes are Special Events and not held the entire summer, but the cost is the same as our regular single hike drop in ($25) or 3 hike pass ($60).  All classes are available for registration now.  Sadly, our online registration system had some glitches last week, but they are now fixed!  If you do encounter ANY trouble registering whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately by email danielle@yogahikesdc.com or phone (202)670-6120.  We are eager to help you and look forward to leading you out on the trails this season!Roz3

Never fear nature lovers!  Our fan favorite Nature Yoga Hikes are also starting up in Rock Creek Park in May.  Join instructors Rachel Wimberley and Krista Mason for hikes up your favorite hills and along your favorite dirt trails through out May on Sundays.  This season we are mixing up locations to give you more variety on Sundays!  Yoga Hikes with Krista will begin at 9am at Peirce Mill every other Sunday.  Yoga Hikes with Rachel Wimberley will be at 10am in Woodley Park (through Dumbarton Oaks) on select Sundays.  Please be sure check the schedule for time, location, and instructor!

Meet Yoga Hikes Instructor Sara Bannon

Sara Bannon Sara is a registered yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance (RYT 200) and graduate of the prestigious Mimi Rieger Teacher Training Program.  A student of yoga for over a decade, Sara began accelerating her practice during (and while recovering from) a full term twin pregnancy.  Through this experience, Sara is equally comfortable working with advanced students and those new to their practice.

Sara’s yoga philosophy can be best described through one of her favorite quotes from BKS Iyengar. Yoga is like music: the rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.”

When not training and teaching yoga, Sara is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Virginia and is dedicated to supporting the local nonprofit community.  Sara is a graduate of Ohio University and is the winner of the 2014 Nonprofit CFO of the Year Award, Rising Star.

We love having Sara on the Yoga Hikes team.  She is upbeat, compassionate, and fun!  A resident of VA, Sara will be leading most of our Yoga Hikes Virginia.

What a fantastic way to start the weekend!
I went on my second yoga hike today with Rachel, and while I already knew she was a wonderful teacher from practicing with her at Stroga, her energy, warmth, and humor are such a breath of fresh air on these yoga hikes.  She provides excellent tips for both the hiking and yoga portions, and always encourages everyone on the hike to ask questions and really treat it as an opportunity to get one-on-one attention throughout the practice and the hike.  She is also just so much fun!
I HIGHLY recommend yoga hikes for a great workout (the hiking moves at a brisk pace, and it really keeps you warmed up for the yoga portions) that is both social and beautiful–what better place to do tree pose than under a tree in Rock Creek?!
And, of course, shoutout to Squeaky the Frog, who really makes the trip.

Getting To Yoga Hikes by Metro or Car

We currently have Yoga Hikes scheduled in two locations in Rock Creek Park.  You can get to BOTH locations by Metro or car, but here’s the inside scoop.  The Woodley Park/Rock Creek/Dumbarton Yoga Hike is only a 1/2 block from the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Metro stop.  There is metered and zoned street parking in this area, but you will likely park 3-4 blocks away so give yourself ample time to find that precious spot.  On the other hand, the Peirce Mill/Rock Creek location has a FREE PARKING LOT and FREE STREET PARKING.  If you are coming by car, it’s only 1.5 miles up the road from our Woodley Park location, so enter in the GPS info below and come find us there on most Sundays!

GREAT if coming by METRO: Woodley Park/Rock Creek/Dumbarton… Nature Yoga Hikes starts across the street from Open City diner at the intersection of 24th and Calvert Street NW in Woodley Park. (one block south of Woodley Park Metro, meter and zone street parking). If walking, driving, or cycling: For GPS use: 2331 Calvert St. NW, Washington, DC 20008.

GREAT if coming by CAR: Peirce Mill/Rock Creek Nature Yoga Hikes starts in the field adjacent to the parking lot of Pierce Mill on Shoemaker Rd, off of Tilden in NW. (Free parking lot and ample free street parking. Pierce Mill is located off the intersection of Beach Dr, Park Rd, and Tilden Rd NW). For Metro, plan on a 20 minute walk from Van Ness Metro. If walking, driving, or cycling: For GPS use: 3910 Shoemaker St NW, Washington, DC 20008

If you come by car we can’t stress enough the importance of planning ahead.  Rock Creek Parkway/Beach Drive is subject to closures due to races and other special events throughout the season.  Be prepared and give yourself at least 15 minutes extra to park and locate us!

100% All Natural Hot Yoga…Hikes

The BeachSummer is in full swing!

Yep!  We’ve got 100% all natural hot yoga every weekend for you.   But since some of you may find the heat daunting, we want to offer a few points to consider.

  • Its cooler in the woods and we practice in the shade.
  • Heat helps you get limber and is great for yoga breakthroughs!
  • It’s not as hot outside as it is in a hot yoga studio (usually 105 degrees!)
  • The summer breeze means no stagnant stuffy air.
  • Nothing like a good sweat to detox the body!
  • We’ll take you to “the beach.”  (Peirce Mill Hike)
  • Some hikes end at an awesome cool water pump! (Peirce Mill Hike)

Bottom line, outdoor hot yoga is high quality good stuff.  Give it a try!  For the rest of July and August we will have at least 2 Yoga Hikes a week.  Sign up online and join us!

We had a fantastic experience offering Yoga Hikes in Rosslyn for the month of June and we plan to be back!  Though these were Urban Yoga Hikes we hiked up good hills and through FIVE parks including Gateway Park, Highlands Park, Hillside Park, Dark Star Park, and Freedom Park!  What really made it great though were all of the hikers who came out for their first Yoga Hike.  Your tweets, posts, and feedback were fantastic.  Thank you!!

We are thrilled to be partnering with the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) to bring Yoga Hikes to VA in the month of June!!  Thanks to the staff at the Rosslyn BID, we will be leading 4 fun Yoga Hikes in Rosslyn, following our signature format (of approximately 15 minutes of yoga/15 minutes of hiking intervals for a total of 90 minutes).  These Urban/Nature Yoga Hikes will take you up hills and through Rosslyn with Yoga Stops at 3 different green spaces.  Please note this is an ACTIVE paced workout designed to give you the cardio benefits of hiking and the strengthening and stretching benefits of yoga. All levels of yoga are welcome.

Where was this photo taken? If you’ve gone on our Rock Creek Park Yoga Hike that starts in Woodley Park then you probably recognize it!  We have stopped on this log bridge in Dumbarton Oaks Park and taken many class photos at this very spot!  Last month a student noted, “Getting to pass real waterfalls is way better than indoor water features! ”  We agree!

5 Reasons to try Yoga Hikes DC!

It’s time for the Friday Five and I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to this week’s Friday Five Link Up!  But who could possibly need 5 reasons to try yoga and hiking together?  It’s YOGA and HIKING!  These are possibly two of your favorite activities combined to form one perfect workout – yum!  It’s like chocolate and peanut butter!  You love both and they are even better together.  Imagine the stretching and strengthening of yoga and the cardio of hiking combined for 90 minutes of blissful outdoor activity!  Need I say more?  Okay…Yoga HIkes for all!

1.  This winter was brutal!  More importantly, spring is here!  You have been itching to get outdoors, take in the fresh air, and move your body.  Yoga Hikes is a great and safe way to do just that while enjoying the fabulous trails of Rock Creek Park.

2.  Root down and reach up for real!  How many times have you heard a yoga instructor say, “Root down into the ground…reach up to the sky!” Only the “ground” was a hardwood floor and the “sky” was a studio ceiling?  Not during a Yoga Hike!  You’ll root down into the real dirt-based earth beneath your feet and reach up to the infinite canopy of the sky.  It is truly energizing!

3.  You love trying new things!  Variety is the spice of life and this is not a 60 minute power yoga class or yoga in the park (though I like those too!).  The Yoga Hikes format consists of intervals of 15 minutes of vinyasa based yoga and 15 minutes of hiking repeated for 90 minutes (it works out to roughly 45 minutes of yoga and 45 minutes of hiking).  We break for YogaStops in three distinct locations, mixing up the scenery so you can take in a great new view.

4.  5 shining stars!   Nearly 500 people went out on a Yoga Hike last season and I couldn’t be more grateful for their reviews on Yelp, comments on Facebook, and awesome blog posts!   Having a great rating is nice, but reading positive reviews from actual clients is the best!  I admit that I’m biased, so please visit these sites or our website to read more from others!

5.  It’s just fun!  You will quiet your mind, but this is not silent yoga.  Yoga Hikes is a social, outdoor, small group workout.  Bring a friend or make new friends on the hike.  We keep our groups under 15 people so that you can get as much attention and instruction as you would like.  And the socializing doesn’t have to end after the hike. Yoga Hikes are currently offered Saturday and Sunday mornings in Rock Creek Park and end just in time for brunch…detox retox, anyone?

Convinced?  I hope so!  The truth is I could offer dozens of reasons to try Yoga Hikes DC this season and hope you’ll give us the opportunity to show you why we think it’s time  to take your yoga outdoors.  If you’ve never tried yoga, I assure you that we are beginner friendly and you will catch on in no time.  For those of you who don’t like bugs, I’ve always got insect repellant in my backpack!

The yoga hike is broken down into intervals – 20 minutes of hiking, 20 mins of yoga in each destination, 20 minutes of hiking to the next destination, and so on. You will sweat in during the hiking portion! Danielle keeps the pace moving quickly and stragglers are enticed to stay with the pack as she talks about the historical landmarks along the way. Her knowledge of DC sights and history of the parks is incredible and she keeps the facts light and fun along the way.
Photo: Yoga Hikes DCThere are three yoga portions, each 20 minutes in length. The first comprises of sun salutations, the second tests your balance and builds strength through standing sequences, and the third allows you to finally relax in seated forward folds and a meditation practice.image

Throughout class, Danielle sprinkles in alignment cues and safety pointers to help both beginners and advanced yogis get the most out of the outdoor yoga experience. As an advanced yogi, I noticed immediately that yoga in sneakers is a lot harder than barefoot, especially on uneven footing. Jumping back to chaturanga dandasana while keeping correct form was near impossible, and unsafe, given the twigs and bramble obstructing a clear path. Danielle made sure to emphasize modifications so everyone could enjoy the practice safely. Between the hike and yoga intervals, my legs and core felt pretty rock solid and well-worked. I slept well that night!

Key highlights: Danielle keeps a stocked backpack with all the essentials you may not even expect to find, such as:
Yoga squares for everyone (keep your bum clean thanks to these cropped sections of yoga mats)
Bug spray (clearly, bugs won’t cramp your style)
Sunscreen (just in case you forgot)
First aid kit (in case you aren’t paying attention and take an unfortunate stumble) Energy bar (did you forget to eat today?)

Our trusty guide frequently reminded the group to always be aware of the earth underneath us, whether we are balancing on twos, fours or seated. Unlevel ground enticed to stay present during the entire yoga hike. There are many more external sights and sounds than we would experience in a yoga studio. This served as a constant reminder to stay focused on our breath, our connection to the earth and our alignment in each yoga pose.

Tips: Wear comfortable closed toe shoes for hiking. Pebbles may be frequent in your path, so open-toe Tevas may not be your best bet.
Wear long yoga pants that go past your knees. You may accidentally perfect your chaturanga dandasana today because you don’t want your knees to get dirty.
Stay present, at all times! In uttanasana, pour weight evenly into feet but know your limits and be careful not to shift too far forward, you don’t want to topple over (it’s been done!)

Yoga Hikes’ Plan to Beat the Heat!

photo by Taldi WalterFor many, summer is about spending as much time outdoors as possible. We relish the long days, let loose our inner child, and enjoy outdoor activities with friends. Yoga Hikes is a great way to embrace all of these things and celebrate this playful season. There’s just one thing…the heat!

When the summer heat is at it’s most intense and an excessive heat warning or air quality advisory has been issued, Yoga Hikes takes it very seriously. Hazardous weather can have extreme consequences on our bodies, which are just not designed for intense activities in temperatures above 90 degrees. In such conditions, over exerting ourselves can result in heat related illness, exhaustion, and stroke. For this reason, Yoga Hikes will be cancelled during heat waves or days of excessive heat. Since the weather has become increasingly unpredictable, as of July 22, 2013 we’ve decided to modify our cancellation policy. For the rest of the summer, if you register for a hike that is cancelled due to extreme weather, we are happy to offer you the option for a refund or a full credit to your account for use towards a future yoga hike.

We are also going to offer a reduced and modified schedule that will take advantage of the cooler early morning and late evening temperatures.  Please see the current Yoga Hikes Schedule for updated times and check back in August for new 2 hour hikes to be added soon!

Don’t forget, it’s cooler under the trees and all of our Yoga Stops always happen in the shade! So grab a friend, wear loose fitting clothes, bring plenty of water, and prepare for a great workout on your next Yoga Hike!

Zack M. thinks – This is going to be the new thing in DC. It’s a good workout, takes place outside, and you get to be social during the hike. We went on the Pierce Mill  route, an hour and a half of hills and beautiful scenery. Danielle, the owner/instructor, is incredibly knowledgeable both about the area (ask her for suggestions on other hiking trails) and yoga. We stopped along the creek, at the top of a hill in a blooming field, and next to the Boulder Bridge for yoga breaks. This is a perfect way to start a weekend and especially great to do with friends or as a couple.

Melody F. writes – I went on my first yoga hike two week ago and I absolutely loved it. I took an Urban Yoga hike which started at Dupont Circle. I’m a plus sized fitness enthusiast and at first I thought it would be awkward to preform yoga in the middle of DC. However, the instructor Danielle was great about reminding us to move with breath, focus on shutting out the outside world, and focus on the pose. I’ve taken a few yoga classes but am still a beginner and I found the 15 minute yoga sessions challenging but do-able.  Once again, Danielle was very good at urging us to try our best, and find the fullest expression of each pose…I had a really fun and positive experience and I will definitely go on another yoga hike again soon.

According to new intern in town, Shannon S. – Just did my first yoga hike (Woodley/Dumbarton Oaks) and really loved it!  I will definitely come back to explore different parks and areas of dc.  I’m an avid hiker, but a yoga beginner and loved the combination of the two activities.  The hiking portions were pretty fast paced, and kept your heartrate up whereas the yoga helped you to relax.  Danielle was great, and very knowledgeable about the areas and yoga.  While hiking, we were all able to socialize and learned a little about the areas we were hiking through as well.  A yoga hike is definitely a great way to start your weekend!FULLLOGO-1

Park enthusiast Cara S. shares – Just did my first ever yoga hike with Danielle…and it will not be my last!  I did the 90 minute Nature Yoga Hike in Rock Creek Park and enjoyed every minute.  Danielle is a great yoga instructor and I was surprised at how much yoga I could actually practice without a mat in the great outdoors.  She’s also a good motivator to keep those legs moving up and down the hills and provides technique advice throughout the 90 minutes.  The hike took me through parts of Rock Creek I had never explored, and I’m certainly going to go back with my pup who will love exploring those trails.  I admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of exercise I got in the 90 minutes…she keeps you moving!

Each year on Memorial Day, through barbecues and picnics with family and friends, we remember those who lost their lives while serving in the US Armed Forces.
