What is a Yoga Hike?

Yoga Hikes combine Vinyasa flow yoga and brisk hiking done in roughly 15 minute intervals over 90 minutes.  It is a social fitness workout that is active, outdoors, and a lot of fun!

Nature Yoga Hikes – 90 minutes

Nature Yoga Hikes are a combination of trails and road hiking, so appropriate footwear is mandatory.  You should arrive dressed and ready to hike and practice yoga for 90 minutes (approximately 45 minutes of yoga and 45 minutes of hiking).  Nature hikes are on dirt trails which requires core work.  You should have a healthy sense of balance and stability to participate in a Nature Hike and be able to keep a steady hiking pace.  Though the yoga is open level, due to the hills and uneven terrain, the hiking is considered moderate.  Most Nature Yoga Hikes start and end at two locations:
Woodley Park (Rock Creek Park/Dumbarton Oaks/Montrose Parks) – This hike begins at the Woodley Park entrance to Rock Creek Parkway at the intersection of 24th and Calvert Street.  Note that the Woodley Park starting point is only a half block south of the Woodley Park Metro.  If you are driving to this location, plan on parking several blocks away and walking to the site (give yourself at least 15 minutes to do this!).
Pierce Mill Rock Creek Park – This hike begins in the field adjacent to the main Pierce Mill parking lot (at the intersection of Tilden Rd, Beach Drive, and Park Rd NW).   The Pierce Mill starting point has ample free parking as there are three free parking lots surrounding The Pierce Mill Barn (off of Tilden, Beach Drive, and Broad Branch Rd).  If you come by Metro it is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Van Ness Metro. Peirce Mill location also has public restrooms and water fountains  available adjacent to this parking area.  Bringing your own water bottle is encouraged.

Urban Yoga Hikes – 90  minutes

Urban Yoga Hikes VA (Rosslyn) – Start and end at the Rosslyn Business Improvement District‘s office across the street from Gateway Park. Our signature Yoga Hikes format of three 15 min. yoga/15 min. hiking intervals for 90 minutes will take you through 5 urban parks and up the hills of Rosslyn, VA. We meet at the street level offices of the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) located at: 1911 North Fort Myer Drive, LL-10, Arlington, VA 22209 (next door to the side of Continental Pool Lounge facing Gateway Park). The hiking will be primarily on paved sidewalks, though we will go up hills and numerous steps.  Appropriate footwear is mandatory, but you can wear whatever clothes you would be most comfortable in.  Please note there is no storage area and there are no restrooms on these hikes.  Backpacks or lumbar/fannypacks are best for carrying personal items with you.  Bringing your own water bottle is encouraged.

Urban Yoga Hikes DC
– Start and end in Dupont Circle.  Meet us on the west side of the fountain (the lawn area between the fountain and CVS) where we will begin our yoga practice before heading out to explore side streets and green spaces around the city.  Urban Yoga Hikes are primarily on sidewalks, include hills, and have multiple stops for practicing yoga.  You should arrive dressed and ready to hike and practice yoga for 90 minutes (approximately 45 minutes of yoga and 40 minutes of hiking).  Urban Yoga Hikes are open-level  yoga combined with easy to moderate hiking.  The hiking will be primarily on paved sidewalks, though we will go up hills and numerous steps.  Appropriate footwear is mandatory, but you can wear whatever clothes you would be most comfortable in.  Public Restrooms are available. Backpacks or lumbar/fannypacks are best for carrying personal items with you so arms remain free.  Bringing your own water bottle is encouraged.

We spent 2 hrs this #LaborDay doing free labor, but we’re all for #volunteering #outdoors to protect the park we love! Freed native trees + a bike rack at Upshur St trail entrance, removing mile-a-minute, porcelain berry, and wineberry! @Crestwood_DC #WeedWarriors @RockCreekNPS pic.twitter.com/fMEFquO5WW

@RockCreekNPS Friends, don’t take the immense environmental value of Rock Creek Park for granted. Heat maps, air and water quality reports are alarming! We desperately need this natural green space as natural green space and so does our region, and planet! It’s barely surviving as it is.

“What kind of mushroom is that?” is asked on many #hikes. Here’s a great opportunity to learn about fungi from a local expert and amazing instructor! twitter.com/ANStweets/stat…

"Use less salt!" is not only a dietary recommendation... Remember this post when winter comes and opt for alternatives to de-cing with salt. @DDOTDC help is also needed to stop wasteful distribution of excess salt on #DC streets. #watershed wapo.st/3dee4Fv
